Utilizing technology
from the Viper team, Knight Industries successfully recreates the
electromagnetic pulse that the Viper used to stop criminals. Their victory is short however, when a group
of high tech criminals succeed in breaking into Knight Industries and stealing
the new weapon. Now, the Foundation
must work to stop the criminals from demonstrating the weapon’s titanic on a
commercial jet.

James Bryant looked at the
security monitors that covered various areas of the building. All was clear. “What’s it look like outside?”
Ronny Jibbons turned around and
replied. “No activity outside either.”
“Good.” James said.
Ronny looked at his watch. “Damn, it’s 1:14am. I hate working the night side.”
James got up and stretched. “Hungry?”
“Yeah,” Ronny replied, looking at
his watch again, “but I don’t go on break until two.”
“Why wait? I’ll go.”
“Cool, man, grab me a Snickers.”
Ronny said.
James grabbed some change out of a
drawer and walked down the hall.
Ronny looked at the cameras and
smiled. He leaned back in his
chair. It may be the wee hours of the
morning, but it was a relaxing time.
James slammed the side of the
vending machine as the Snickers bar got stuck.
“Dammit. Come on!”
He set his bag of peanuts on the
ground, grabbed both sides of the vending machine and tilted it back and forth
until the candy bar fell to the bottom bin.
He smirked, grabbed
the candy bar and his bag of peanuts, then turned around to walk back to the
desk.
Upon reaching the main hallway, he
noticed that the front desk was empty.
“Jibbons?” He called out. “Jibbons? Come on, man
you can’t leave the desk like this!
Jibbons!”
He rolled his eyes and walked over
to the restrooms. He opened the door
and saw Ronny lying on the floor, hog-tied, with duct tape over his mouth.
“Oh shit!” James yelled, running
back to the security station. When he
reached the desk, he noticed that the security monitors were all dark. Reaching for the silent alarm, he heard
footsteps. He stopped and turned around
to see that a man appeared behind him.
The man smiled. “Good morning.” The man spoke in a British
accent. He hit James in the side of the
head with his gun.
The man bent over and disarmed
James. “We have two minutes, before the
backup security systems activate, gentlemen.” He said.
Out of the dark corners of the
lobby, three others, dressed all in dark clothes, made their appearance and ran
down the hallway, with the British man running after.
A blonde man reached a entryway
first with the other three catching up.
He quickly pulled his backpack down and pulled out a small device. The round device flashed digital numbers at
a fast pace before stopping on four numbers.
“The combination is 7291.” He said
to the British man.
The British man nodded and the
blonde man entered the four numbers on a pad.
The door clicked and opened.
“Ninety seconds.” The British man
said.
The group piled through the
doorway and ran down a corridor. They
came to another locked door. The group
walked up to it and entered the access codes.
“Let’s go!” the British man yelled
as they ran into the room.
The woman walked over to a giant
metal vault sitting on a column in the middle of the floor and entered another
set of access codes in the pad. A panel
slowly dropped down and a platform slid out.
On the platform was a device that looked like a weapon.
“Yes!” the woman exclaimed, picking
up the weapon.
“Sixty seconds, time to exit.” The British man said.
The two men ran out the doors
leaving the woman and the British man.
The woman placed the weapon in a case and bolted out the door with the
British man following.
The group of robbers ran over to a
black Chevrolet Suburban. The British
man hopped into the driver’s seat and everyone else piled inside. He started the truck and sped out of the
parking lot of Knight Industries.
0710 Hrs
Russell Maddock walked down the
hallway of Knight Industries passing Seattle police officers and internal
investigators.
Natalie Markins was standing in
the clean room where the heist took place.
She was carefully looking at the central vault that used to house the
Electro Magnetic Pulse Weapon.
“KITT,” Natalie said, squinting
her eyes, looking down the side of the vault, “is there any kind of traceable
or identifiable marks you can find?”
“None whatsoever, Natalie.” KITT reported. “Whoever
pulled this off was a pro and knew what they were looking for.”
“Great.” Natalie said, looking up
as Kevin walked in the room, visibly angry.
He slammed his backpack on the
table and sat down in a chair, dejected.
“You okay?” Natalie asked,
standing up and facing him.
“Do I look okay?” Kevin
asked. “We spent months on the
technology the Viper provided us with and it gets stolen.”
“The Viper?” Natalie asked.
“You’ve still not caught up with
us?” Kevin asked. “The Viper is another
super-car that a city created which operates in Metro-”
Natalie cut him off. “No, I know what it means. The Bureau has expressed interest in the
project ever since they helped bust Lane Cassidy. Trust me Kevin, I am very well aware of FLAG operations.”
Kevin nodded and rubbed his eyes.
Natalie realized that she had hurt
him. “I’m sorry Kevin, I know that this
project was special to you. How long
have you been working on it?”
“Almost a year.” Kevin said. “The Viper technology just wouldn’t work
with KI systems, so we had to adapt it and recreate the weapon on our own
terms.”
“What was the status of the
weapon?” Natalie asked.
“It was fully functional and ready
for testing. We had testing scheduled
today.” Kevin said, tossing his PDA across the desk.
“We’re in big trouble if that
weapon is in the wrong hands.” Said Bonnie Barstow, walking into the room.
“Any ideas as to what groups could
have been interested in the weapon?” Natalie asked.
“No,” Kevin said, “this weapon was
top-secret, the only people who knew about this were the ones associated with the
project. Bonnie, myself, and a few
others.”
Natalie nodded. “We’re getting somewhere now.”
“Oh?” Bonnie asked.
“Yeah, looks like you guys were
the victim of some industrial espionage.”
“No way!” Bonnie said.
“Why so quick to write that idea
off, Dr. Barstow?” Natalie asked.
“Because it isn’t possible, that’s
why. I spent about 75 percent of my
time in Knight Industries working on repairing KITT after Michael took him for a
horrible romp, which, I must say, you can almost be classified as a worse
driver than he is. The other 25 percent
was spent on securing Knight Industries and making it impenetrable.”
“Correct me if I am wrong, but
didn’t The Outfit manage to pay off two people in KI, those who actually held
parts of the formula for the MBS?” Natalie asked.
“What?!” Bonnie asked.
“Dammit, Natalie.” Kevin said.
“What are you talking about?”
Bonnie asked, growing angrier.
“Tell her, Kevin. Tell her how The Outfit managed to worm its
way into KI and pay off two men who held the formula.” Natalie said.
Kevin shook his head.
“Why the hell wasn’t I told about
this?” Bonnie asked.
“It had been deemed classified.”
Kevin explained.
“Bull, I have the highest
classification rating here. I should
have been informed about this. Are we
looking at a cover-up?” Bonnie asked.
Kevin glared at Natalie and
nodded.
“Son of a bitch.” Bonnie said.
“I’m pointing out the absolute
facts, right here. You guys either
have, or had, a leak.” Natalie said.
“Great, so what are we supposed to
do from here?” Kevin asked.
“For starters, you can get me a
list of all people associated with the project. Then you check out your security logs and see which of those people
didn’t show up for work today. If one
is missing, we have our investigative lead.” Natalie said.
Kevin nodded and left the
room. Natalie stood up and began to
follow.
“What are you doing?” Bonnie
asked.
“Beginning my investigation.”
Natalie said, walking past Bonnie and following Kevin down the hall.
Bonne shook her head, got up, and
ran after. “Agent Markins. Agent Markins!”
Natalie glanced behind her and
kept on walking after Kevin. “What is
it, Dr. Barstow? I have work to do.”
“What if all of the project
assistants are accounted for?” Bonnie asked.
“Then we place this building in
lockdown until all of the people associated with the project have been properly
interrogated.”
“What?! That could take hours!”
“Your point?” Natalie asked.
“We can’t halt the operations of
Knight Industries for an interrogation.” Bonnie said.
Natalie stopped and faced
Bonnie. “Dr. Barstow, I have been
tasked with conducting an investigation for the theft of KI-Project X-Ray Alpha
Twenty Seven. Don’t get in my way.”
“Hey, you don’t work for the
Bureau any more, Agent Markins, get it through your head. We are a team here-”
“And we are a team at the FBI
too.” Natalie said. “So I don’t need a
‘team player speech’ that the executive staff at Bullseye would give to their
employees okay? What I need is your
cooperation with finding this device.
So, Dr. Barstow, stay out of my way.” Natalie said, walking off,
leaving Bonnie defeated in the hallway.
0800 Hrs
Kevin and Natalie were sitting in the
security office in front of a computer terminal.
“Well, all twenty seven people are
accounted for.” Kevin said, looking at a highlighted image on the computer
screen. “Except her.”
Natalie looked at the picture on
the screen. “Cynthia Weiss.” She read.
“Ms. Weiss was associated with the
project as one of the lead technicians.
She came highly recommended from Cal-Tech.”
“What was her excuse for calling
out today?” Natalie asked.
Kevin clicked on the mouse and
read off the screen. “She called in at
0634 hours explaining that she had been sick the previous night from eating
something bad.”
“Nice and vague.” Natalie
said. “How about we call her house and
see how her food poisoning is doing.”
Elliott Bay Towers
Black clothes were strewn on the
floor of the bedroom overlooking Elliott Bay.
A couple lay naked in bed under the covers. A red-haired woman leaned over a man, kissing him and then rolled
over on her back next to him.
“Did they believe your excuse?” a
man with a British accent asked. It was
the same man from the heist the previous night.
Cynthia Weiss, the same woman who
assisted in previous night’s robbery, looked at her bed mate and smiled. “Damn right, the receptionist delivered the
usual sympathy and crap.”
“Good,” the British man said, “I
guess you won’t be returning to Knight Industries tomorrow either.”
“Or the following days either.”
Cynthia added. She rolled on top of the
British man again. “So tell me, when we
get to shove Knight Industries’ shit down their own throats, David?”
David Dayne smiled and kissed his
lover. “When they know we have it. We have to start a disaster first, in order
to get them in the end.”
Cynthia smiled, got out of bed,
kicked at the pile of clothes on the floor and stood in front of a window. “Too bad this doesn’t face the Space Needle
like the doc’s a few floors up.”
David got out and edged up behind
Cynthia wrapping his arms around her waist.
He briefly kissed her neck and then brought his mouth up to her
ear. “Your espionage tactics have
helped us a lot, and will make us rich.”
Cynthia turned around and kissed
David. “But how rich is it going to
make me?” She asked after she pulled away.
“You need not worry about money.”
David said. “Hang along with us and you
will do just fine.”
“And if I don’t? Do I get the compensation I deserve?”
“I thought sleeping with me was
compensation enough.” David said, slyly.
Cynthia shot him a cocky smile and
sat down on the bed.
David eased down and laid her down
on the bed, laying himself on top of her.
“As we discussed before, fifty seven thousand dollars.”
Cynthia smiled again. “Maybe I like it here just fine.”
The two were about to kiss when
they were interrupted by the telephone ringing. David glanced at the Caller-ID.
“Knight Industries is calling.”
“Wonder what they want.”
“Who cares?” David said, kissing
Cynthia and pulling the covers over them.
“No answer.” Natalie said, hanging
up the phone. “You guys keep audio
phone records, right?” Natalie asked.
Kevin hesitated before answering. “Yeah.”
Natalie nodded. “Good, will you pull up that file for me
please?”
Kevin typed on the keyboard and
the phone conversation that took place earlier that morning was played.
Natalie listened to it and took
notes on a notepad. When it finished,
she pressed a button on her comm-link and called KITT. “KITT, activate your Voice Analyzer.”
“Voice Analyzer activated,
Agent Markins.” KITT replied.
“Good, listen to this
conversation,” Natalie said. Pressing
the play button again, “and tell me who is lying.”
The conversation played again and
Natalie waited for it to finish.
“The person who called out from
work is lying, almost obviously.” KITT
reported.
“Obviously.” Kevin said, with a
smile.
“Bingo. Thank you, KITT.” Natalie said.
“What are we gonna do now? Go and bust her?” Kevin asked.
Natalie stared at the screen for a
while. “I think Cynthia has some
questions to answer.” She said, grabbing her jacket and walking out the
door. Kevin got up and followed.
“I’m going with you.” He said.
“KITT, meet us at the main
entrance of Knight Industries.”
KITT was parked on the north side
of the Knight Foundation campus. Inside, his dashboard lit up and came to
life. The engine started and the car
shifted into gear and drove down the road, sans a human driver.
The fire engine red car with a red
scanner light on its prow, pulled up in front of the Knight Industries
building. Natalie and Kevin were
standing before the glass double doors.
KITT opened the driver and passenger
side doors as Natalie and Kevin walked over to them and got inside.
Natalie pressed a button on the
center roof console marked Normal Cruise. She pressed the gas pedal and drove away.
“So what do you expect when we get
to her pad?” Kevin said.
“I’m not sure.” Natalie said.
“Rough estimate?” Kevin asked.
“Probably a heavily armed
welcoming committee.”
Kevin sighed.
KITT, knowing all too well when to
change a subject, spoke. “Kevin, what
is this EM Device that was stolen?”
“It’s a KI-tweaked replica of the
Static Pulse Cannon that the Viper uses.”
“How powerful is it?” Natalie
asked.
“Same calibration as the Static
Pulse Cannon. It disrupts any
electrical activity in a machine, stalling it, so to speak. The Viper’s version of the cannon lasts only
five minutes, where the KI version has a special setting which allows the user
to adjust the timeframe of how long the charge lasts.”
“What is the range?” KITT asked.
“The weapon has a range of about
one point five miles. It has a tiny
camera mounted just on top of the barrel, which displays an image on a small
monitor on the rear of the weapon.”
“Similar to a zoom on a camera?”
KITT asked.
“Exactly,” Kevin said, “we used
the same zoom system that you use.”
“What are the time settings?” Natalie
asked.
“The lowest setting is two
minutes, and the highest setting is thirty minutes.” Kevin explained.
“What did you have in mind for
this weapon?”
“Well, after testing was finished,
we would have considered mounting it on KITT.” Kevin said.
“It would give me a few more
choices for capture, correct Kevin?” KITT asked.
”Exactly.”
“Agent Markins, we are approaching
the Elliott Bay Towers.”
“All right, thanks, KITT,” Natalie
said, looking out the window, “Oooh, nice Beamer.” She said as a black BMW
passed them.
“Watch it, Natalie, you’ll make
KITT jealous.”
“Kevin, that’s impossible!” KITT
said. “Besides, that BMW has nothing on
me.”
Natalie parked KITT at the front
of the building, got out and walked towards the doors, with Kevin quickly following.
The doorman opened the door for
Natalie, and spoke to them as they walked through. “Excuse me, but your car can’t be parked there.”
Kevin turned around and turned
back to the doorman. “Oh, don’t worry
about it.” He said, nodding for Natalie to keep walking.
“But…” the doorman said, watching
the two walk towards the elevators. He
turned back to the street and watched the car start up. His eyes went wide as the car pulled out
into traffic and left its illegal parking space. “Whoa.”
Cynthia, now clothed, was standing
on the balcony. Something made her
glance down towards the street. “What
the hell?!”
David ran over and looked at the
street with her. “What is it?”
“That!” she said, pointing down.
David squinted and saw the familiar
form of a black-topped red car, which he had only seen in the computer
simulations that Cynthia swiped from Knight Industries. “Shit!”
“FLAG’s here.” Cynthia said,
running back into the apartment.
David quickly followed and tore
open a closet door, revealing the black case from last night. He picked it up and slammed it on the bed,
opening it.
He pulled out the EM weapon and
activated it.
“Kevin, Agent Markins! One of the occupants of the apartment has
activated the EM weapon!” KITT’s panicked
voice came over the comm-link.
Natalie took out her Beretta 92FS
handgun out of her holster and cautiously walked down the corridor.
David walked to the balcony and
saw the car parked in the curbside parking area. He strapped himself to the weapon and aimed it downward. The target locked on KITT and he smiled.
“He’s locking the EM weapon on
me!” KITT said.
Natalie took off running towards
the apartment only to be met by the door opening and a woman with an automatic
machine gun bursting out and firing.
Natalie ducked and slammed her
back through a door into another apartment.
Kevin managed to duck into a stairwell.
To her luck, Natalie found the
apartment empty and quickly ran into the kitchen as Cynthia sprayed the living
room with bullets.
Cynthia’s rage was met by gunfire
from Natalie. She knew that her Beretta
was no match for the machine gun, but she decided to unload a round above her
head.
Cynthia focused her aim on the
counter and Natalie found herself trapped.
Kevin spoke into his
comm-link. “KITT, she’s in trouble!”
“I know, Kevin-”
Kevin winced as a high pitched
feedback scream erupted through the comm-link and interrupted KITT’s
sentence. “KITT?!”
David smiled as the weapon’s
discharge hit KITT dead on. He looked
out the apartment door as he heard Cynthia firing madly in the apartment across
the hall.
Cynthia’s firing stopped, she had
run out of ammo. Natalie knew this was
her chance to take the girl before she had a chance to reload. She stood up, only to see Cynthia aiming a
handgun at her.
“Shit!” Natalie yelled, ducking
behind the counter again as Cynthia fired the handgun.
“I got you now!” Cynthia yelled as
the emptied four rounds into what was left of the counter.
What she didn’t see was Kevin,
rushing up behind her and tackling her down to the ground. The gun was knocked from her hands and
sailed across the room.
Cynthia struggled as Kevin pinned
her to the ground.
“I got her, Natalie!” he yelled.
“No you don’t.” a voice said
behind them. It was David. He produced a Beretta 96 Centurion out of
his coat and aimed it at Kevin. “I got
a gun aimed at Junior, lady, hang it up!”
Natalie stood up with an angry
look on her face. She set the gun down
and put her hands up.
David smiled. “Let’s go, Cynthia.”
Cynthia pushed Kevin out of the
way and got up. She walked out the door
in front of David, picking up the black case, which housed the EM weapon.
“Say ‘hello’ to KITT for me in
about.. ohh, thirty minutes.” David said, walking out the door.
Natalie put her hands down and
slammed the counter. “Dammit!”
Kevin got up. “Guess you were right.”
“Who the hell was that British
prick?” Natalie asked.
“Beats me. Cynthia’s flame I guess.” Kevin said.
“What did he mean about KITT?”
“I don’t know… wait a minute.”
Kevin said.
“What is it?”
“When I was in the hall, KITT
alerted me to you being trapped. He was
stopped in the middle of a sentence and I got feedback through the comm-link.”
Natalie spoke into her
comm-link. “KITT? KITT?”
“Oh God…” Kevin said.
“What?”
Kevin ran out of the apartment and
down the hall. Natalie ran after him.
When they ran down the three
flights of stairs, Kevin burst through the glass doors and out onto the
pavement.
He ran over to KITT who was parked
on the side of the road. Kevin put his
hands on the rear spoiler and but pulled them away quickly. “Hot shit!” he yelled, waving his hands in
the cool air.
Natalie ran over and saw the
smoking car. “What the hell happened?!”
“Oh shit… he was hit with the EM
gun!” Kevin said.
“KITT?” Natalie asked. “KITT!?”
She walked over and used her coat to open the driver’s side door. “Well I don’t see any external damage. Except the fact that the whole dashboard is
dark!” Natalie yelled back to Kevin.
Kevin walked over, still cradling
his hands. “Damn.” He said.
Kevin managed to get his burnt
hands wrapped in gauze while he supervised the flatbed tow truck hoisting KITT
off of the street.
Natalie stood off to the side, on
her cell-phone, with her right hand plugging her ear to drown out the noise
from the busy street. “Yeah… I don’t
know… look Russ listen, the only lead in KI is Cynthia… how am I sure?! I was a criminologist, Russ, I know these
things! You were a DA, you prosecuted
these assholes, well I know how they work… yeah I’m finished… Look, Russ, we’re
taking KITT back to KI now… yeah he’s still inactive… I don’t know how that
shit works, ask the boy genius when we get back!” Natalie said, hanging up the
phone.
KITT was secured onto the flatbed
and the KI drivers got inside and drove off.
Kevin and Natalie got inside a black sedan and drove off behind it.
Bonnie and Maddock were standing
in front of the Knight Industries garage as the flatbed truck pulled up. Four other KI technicians were waiting there
with them as the truck entered the garage.
Bonnie and the techies followed the truck as Maddock met Natalie and
Kevin.
“What happened?” Maddock asked.
“They hit KITT with the EM.” Kevin
said.
“Damage estimates?” Maddock asked.
“No external damage,” Kevin said,
“except for superheating the MBS.” He said, showing his gauzed hands.
“How about internal damage?”
Maddock asked.
“Well, the EM weapon was designed
to just stop all electronic activity, not destroy anything.” Kevin said.
“How was it able to penetrate the
MBS?” Natalie asked.
Kevin looked at the ground and
shuffled his feet. “Well….”
“Kevin?” Maddock asked.
“We decided to test the EM weapon
on a surface covered with the MBS. We
were pretty much surprised that it was able to penetrate.”
“Why didn’t you lower the
calibration?” Natalie asked.
“That was the next step of our
testing.”
“I think an even better question
is why did you even decide to use the MBS?” Natalie asked.
“We wanted to use various surfaces
to test it on. From the MBS, to
fiberglass to the new steel, and the bulletproof material that the Bureau
uses.” Kevin explained.
“Oh, great.” Natalie said.
Bonnie walked out of the
garage. “Well, the EM weapon did what
we figured it would do. The pulse timer
was set at the maximum setting. He
should be waking up—well, reactivating any minute now.” She explained.
The four of them walked into the
garage, where KITT was set on the ground and connected to various power
sources.
“Would the CPU be damaged in any
way?” Natalie asked.
“No,” Bonnie said, “we designed
the weapon not to destroy, just to temporarily stop. No data loss should occur, but we have him hooked up to these
power sources just in case.”
They all turned around as they
heard the familiar sound of the Knight 4000 starting up. The red scanner in front of the car began
moving once again.
“KITT?” Bonnie asked.
“Is that you, Bonnie?” KITT asked,
slow at first, but returning to normal.
“Yeah, KITT,” Bonnie said, “it’s
me. We’re all here. What’s wrong?” she asked, kneeling down in
front of KITT’s scanner and placing her hands on his hood.
“Nothing’s wrong, Bonnie.” KITT
said. There was a long pause. “I don’t know.”
“What’s wrong with him?” Maddock
asked.
“He’s feeling the after effects of
the EM weapon,” Kevin explained, “KITT, what do you remember?”
“Agent Markins was trapped in a
gun battle in an apartment, and all of a sudden, my systems abruptly shut
down. After that, I found myself
reactivated, here in the Knight Industries garage.”
“KITT,” Natalie said, “you’re
telling me you have no memory of the time you were deactivated?”
“No. Bonnie, my internal chronometers are off by exactly thirty
minutes.” KITT said.
“No, KITT. You were shut down for a total of thirty minutes.”
Natalie explained.
“How can that be? As I observed it, it was instantaneous.”
KITT argued.
0915 Hrs
Maddock, Kevin, Bonnie, and
Natalie were sitting inside Maddock’s office.
“Now Bonnie, Kevin… can you be
absolutely 100 percent positive that the EM discharge didn’t damage KITT in any
way?” Maddock asked.
“Russ, we’ve tested this weapon on
five computers ranging from 8080’s to Pentium Fours.” Bonnie said.
“Of course the 8080’s didn’t do so
well on some occasions.” Kevin said.
“Right, but KITT is more than an
8080, or even the Pentium Five prototype.
You know that, Russ.” Bonnie said/
“I know,” Maddock said, standing
up and rubbing his head, “and that’s the main reason why I’m asking about his
system status.”
“The computers registered a time
loss on their clocks as well.” Bonnie said.
“KITT’s perfectly normal.” Kevin
said. “Provided that we haven’t tested
this weapon on living things, I would say KITT passed with flying colors?”
“Living things? KITT?” Natalie asked.
“Yeah,” Bonnie said, with a tone
in her voice. “What’s wrong, Agent
Markins?”
“I’m having a problem with you
guys regarding KITT as a living thing.
I mean… he’s a collection of machines.
A sentient artificial intelligence, not a human being.” Natalie said,
protesting.
“I disagree with you on that.”
Bonnie said.
“Yeah?” Natalie asked.
“Yeah. KITT is much more than circuits, chips, and wiring,” Bonnie
argued, “he IS a sentient life form, but we’ve come to know him as more.”
“I just think you’re short stroking
yourself believing him to be more than an AI.” Natalie said.
“How long have you been serving
with KITT?” Bonnie asked, her tone growing stronger.
Maddock stood up and patted Kevin
on the shoulders, who looked up at him.
“Huh?” Kevin asked.
Maddock gestured his head to the
door. Kevin got up and the two men
walked outside.
“How long, Agent Markins?” Bonnie
repeated.
“Little more than a month.”
Natalie said.
“Right, so therefore, you have no
clue about what we are talking about!” Bonnie yelled.
“I’m just saying-”
“Just stop!” Bonnie said, holding
her hand up in the air. “Agent Markins,
you are the brand new driver to a whole new outfit which you are unfamiliar
with. You’ve been riding with KITT for
only a month! You have NO idea the kind
of connection we have formed with him.
Kevin and Shawn have been with the Foundation for over a year. Maddock doesn’t care; he’s just the boss. I’ve been with KITT for almost a total of
eight years, I know every circuit, wire, everything.”
“Bonnie, I’m paid to drive, and
bring criminals in.”
“If you’d been riding with KITT as
long as Michael and Shawn have, you would understand, Agent Markins.”
“Natalie!”
“I beg your pardon?” Bonnie asked.
“I do have a first name you know!”
Natalie said, taking out her ID card and flinging it at Bonnie, who batted it
away. “It’s Natalie, just in case you
didn’t know.”
Bonnie scoffed. “I don’t have time for this. You stay out of my way, and I’ll stay out of
yours!”
“My pleasure.” Natalie said,
getting up and walking out.
The door slammed open and Maddock
and Kevin stood clear. Natalie stormed
down the hallway and staircase.
Bonnie came rushing out, not too
long after. “God I hate that bitch.”
She said to the two men. “You gonna do
anything about her?”
“Do what?” Maddock asked. “She’s our driver, she hasn’t done anything
wrong. You two disagree, big whoop.”
Maddock said, returning to his office, leaving Kevin and Bonnie alone.
Bonnie sighed and stretched her
neck. “Kevin, if I happen to wander up
to the Space Needle one of these days, with a machine gun…”
“Don’t worry,” Kevin said, “I’ll
have the secretary disavow all knowledge of your actions.” He said with a
smile.
Natalie stood at the top of the
stairwell in the garage, looking down at KITT, who was still hooked up to some
machines.
She paused before walking down the
stairwell. “KITT?” she asked, on her
way down, her voice echoing in the massive garage.
“Yes Agent Markins?” KITT replied.
“Natalie.” she corrected. “Why
does everyone call me by my FBI title?”
“I… I don’t know, Natalie. I believe that all of us are used to some
sort of formality with FBI agents.” KITT speculated.
“Silence of The Lambs and X Files trained
everyone’s minds?” Natalie asked, leaning on KITT’s passenger side.
“But of course, Clarice.” KITT
said, his voice altered.
Natalie laughed but then grew
serious. “Bonnie hates me.”
“No she doesn’t.” KITT said. “Shawn leaving was the toughest thing for
all of us, mainly Bonnie, who thought of Shawn as a little sister. Potentially because Shawn has my memory chip
implanted in her brain.”
“I think I made her mad when we
were talking about you in Maddock’s office.
She said she regarded you more as a human, than an AI.”
“Most people who have been with me
for a long period of time tend to. I
don’t mind either way, though.” KITT said.
“Either way what?” Natalie asked.
“If they would regard me as a
human, or an AI.” KITT said.
“You know, I haven’t had many
partners before.” Natalie said. “I was
so used to just riding alone…”
“You find it hard to trust a
talking car, don’t you?” KITT asked.
Natalie closed her eyes and
remembered a few moments from a day at the academy…
“Markins, move it!” she yelled.
Natalie quickly ran after her
classmate, Julie Allison. She couldn’t
believe that gunmen had penetrated the security at Quantico. The two women were only two months from graduation,
and now they were thrown into a hostile situation, far too early.
“I don’t see anyone!” Natalie
yelled.
“Let’s just get out of here!”
Julie replied.
The two classmates quickly came
to a walk and turned a corner.
“Did you get a look at him?”
Natalie asked.
“No,” Julie replied, “did you?”
Natalie shook her head. The two of them slowly walked down a
staircase. “This is bad.” She said.
“We’ve been trained for this,”
Julie said. “The only thing different
is that we don’t have any guns.” She said, as she reached the bottom of the
stairs. Out of nowhere, an arm appeared
and fired three shots in her chest.
Julie was thrown back onto
Natalie, who fell onto the stairs.
“Julie!”
The gunman ran out a
doorway. Natalie was stunned, holding
her classmate on the stairs.
The blood gushed out of Julie’s
wounds. She was dead in a matter of
seconds.
Natalie’s head snapped up as
she heard more gunfire outside. The
door slammed open again. ‘This is it,’
she thought, ‘he’s come back to finish me.’
But, rather than an armed
criminal, five armed FBI agents ran into the room, quickly scrambling to secure
it...
Natalie opened her eyes. “You know, KITT… it’s sometimes hard to
trust anyone but yourself, period.”
“I don’t think I could ever
imagine life without a partner.” KITT said.
Natalie didn’t say anything.
“Well, anyway. Before the weapon was discharged, I managed
to get some visuals of Miss Weiss and her male companion.” KITT said, with the
picture of David Dayne appearing on the windshield monitor.
Natalie looked inside.
“His name is David Dayne,” KITT said,
“a British National. None of the
domestic law enforcement agencies have heard of him. However, some digging into MI5 revealed that Mr. Dayne was once an agent.”
“MI5,
the UK Secret Service.” Natalie stated.
“Correct. However, his files were heavily buried,
almost as if they wanted to discredit his association with the agency.”
“Should
we call the director and see if he can shed any light on it?”
“No need
to,” KITT said, “I have already found why he was dismissed and
discredited. David Dayne was one of
their top agents. His field was
terrorism, and often investigated attacks in Northern Ireland.”
“Okay.”
Natalie said.
“After a
terrorist bomb had destroyed a shelter, two blocks from David’s flat, MI5
decided to investigate their own agent and found that he was collaborating with
the Irish National Liberation Army, also known as the INLA.” KITT said.
“Wow…
you’re telling me that MI5 covered it up?”
“It was
determined that it would be for the good of the service that his treason be
covered up and kept from everyone, including Parliament.” KITT said.
Natalie
walked over to KITT’s driver side door and got in. “How you feeling?” she asked.
“Just
fine,” KITT replied, “where are we going?”
“We have
to stop and think for a moment here.” Natalie said.
“About?”
“About
why David Dayne would want this weapon.
It’s obvious that he is some kind of terrorist collaborator, so I am
getting an inkling that he isn’t the real top banana we are after.”
“Why do
you say that?” KITT asked.
“Well, since
he decided to be a double agent, loyal to MI5 and the INLA, then we have to
think that he might just be a soldier of fortune. I’ve dealt with mercenary criminals before… something is just
telling me that he isn’t the big cheese.”
“So now
what?” KITT asked. “What do you think
his next move will be?”
“KITT,
that’s a real good question. I think we
should just quietly canvas the city, and see what we come up with. It’s his move now.”
KITT
started his engine. “It feels like it’s
been his move all along.”
1529
Hrs
The
telephone rang. Maddock picked it up
and answered. “This is Russell
Maddock.”
“Hello
Mr. Maddock. I assume you know who this
is.” A British
voice said.
“David
Dayne.” Maddock said.
“Very
good. I assume you will allow me to act
as an agent to tender Cynthia Weiss’ resignation.” He said, laughing.
“Cut the
crap, Dayne. We know all about
you. What is it that you want?”
“A
very forward man. I like that.” David said. “Very simple, really. No games, no bullshit, just a ransom, and a
consequence. Quantis Airlines flight
Nine Twenty Four will be landing at King’s County International Airport, better
known as Boeing Field, around four forty five pm today. If you would like the plane and its
passengers to land safely on the ground, then I suggest you wire five hundred
thousand dollars into a Swiss Bank account, which should be faxed over to your
office right now. The money must be
received by four forty pm when the plane enters Boeing Field airspace.”
Maddock
looked at the fax, which came out of the fax machine and sat in the tray. “You’re talking half a million dollars! There’s no way in hell we can meet that!”
“Then
tell that to the one hundred ten passengers who might give a bad feedback
record to Quantis Airlines.” David said, hanging up.
Maddock
took the fax out of the tray and looked at it.
He slammed it down on the desk.
“Half a million dollars in an
hour, this guy must be crazy!” Natalie yelled.
“No shit!” Maddock yelled through the videophone. “Do we have any
kind of choice?”
“I guess not.” Natalie said. “KITT, run a trace on the cell-phone
call. And see what you can get with
that Swiss Bank account.”
“Right away Natalie.” KITT said.
Natalie paused, hearing KITT
actually say her first name. “Russ,
contact Kevin and Bonnie. Ask them if
there is any kind of thing they can construct that would help us neutralize the
pulse.”
The computer screen split into two
and Kevin’s face appeared next to Maddock’s.
“You want some kind of neutralizer for the EM weapon? We haven’t even done full testing on the
prototype, how can you expect us to find a way to be able to shut it down?”
“I don’t know! Ultra sonic frequency wave or some shit… I’m
a criminologist, not a cyber geek!” Natalie said, turning the wheel. “Listen, you guys get working on how to take
down the weapon. Russ, this guy is
gonna call back, so do what you can to stall him. KITT and I will fake a transfer into his account.”
“All right,” Maddock said, “but you better get to Boeing Field and
warn them. Don’t let the Airport
Authority and Seattle Metro stop him, though.
If he gets suspicious, he’ll disappear and take down another plane some
other time.”
“You got it. Good luck everyone!” Natalie said, slamming
the gas pedal to the floor.
KITT sped down the highway.
“KITT, call Boeing Field and
Quantis Airlines.”
Natalie heard a number being
dialed, but then it stopped. “What
happened?”
“I think I found a problem. The EM discharge must have damaged a circuit
which won’t allow me to make outgoing communications.”
“Perfect.” Natalie said, rolling
her eyes and slamming the steering wheel.
“Good luck everyone,” Bonnie
repeated, harshly. “Like we need her
charity and luck.”
“You know what? You’re jealous.” Kevin said, looking up at
her.
“Jealous?! Me?
How so?” Bonnie said.
“Because another female entered
FLAG. Mainly KITT’s life.”
“No way.” Bonnie said, picking up
a tube. “Shawn is a woman, she’s with
FLAG.”
“Yeah, but she was already here
when you returned. You left KI in the
early 90’s, you came back a decade later, not really caring, or ready to return
to action. Now Shawn takes a leave of
absence and Natalie comes in from the Bureau.”
“I’m not jealous.” Bonnie said,
slamming the tube down. “But I do have
problems with her.”
“Like what? I think she’s a great driver. Sure ain’t no Shawn though…” Kevin said.
“That’s the thing. She isn’t Shawn! But she acts like she is Shawn’s replacement, and her ‘extensive
FBI knowledge,’” Bonnie said, mocking.
“Give me a break.”
“Bonnie, enough.” Kevin said. “Enough.
You aren’t giving Agent Markins- Natalie, a chance. You’re so close minded with Shawn… you aren’t
seeing that Natalie is here to help us.”
“I guess you’re right,” Bonnie
said, “I guess I was so used to treating Shawn like a kid sister… when she
left… and Natalie came in… I guess I was just the jealous older sister.”
“You still have time to start
anew.” Kevin said, smiling. He handed a
book to her. “All right, we built that
weapon, now it’s time to take down the son of a bitch.”
1622 Hrs
Natalie pulled up to the curbside
check in at King’s County International Airport. She hopped out of KITT and ran inside.
KITT sat along the curb and
activated his surveillance mode.
“The white zone is for the
immediate loading and unloading of passengers only. No parking.” Said the voice
over the PA system. It began to repeat
itself in Spanish and French.
“Oh be quiet.” KITT said. On his central monitor, the words: MicroJam
Radio appeared. The voice abruptly
stopped as KITT slowly pulled out of the white zone.
Natalie ran inside the airport and
up to a security station. She took out
her wallet and flashed her ID. “FLAG
Special Agent Natalie Markins, I need to talk to the security chief and a
senior representative from Quantis Airlines.”
The nervous security guard nodded
and waved her through.
“KITT, scan the vicinity for Dayne
and the weapon.” Natalie said, in her commlink.
“I’m picking up an SUV
containing two people and the weapon on the outskirts of the airport. They’re directly south of runway 27-R.”
“All right,” Bonnie said, “here we
go again.”
“I’m double checking the
equations.” Kevin said, typing on the computer.
“Think this will work?”
“I hope so.” Kevin said.
The telephone rang on Maddock’s
desk. “Dayne?”
“Yes,” David answered, “very good. I’m checking my account records now, and I do not see any trace
of the money inside of it.”
“We’re doing what we can,” Maddock said over the phone, “but you have to understand
that we need more time!”
“More time isn’t good enough!”
David yelled into the phone. “Now you
transfer the money, or the plane crashes, got it!?” he hung up.
Cynthia walked over to David. “We got them right where we want them.” She
said.
David smiled and kissed her. “Go back to your flat and start packing, for
our flight to Cuba.”
Cynthia kissed back and
nodded. She got into the SUV and drove
off.
“All right, KITT,” Natalie said,
“worst case scenario here. If the pulse
hits the plane, what would happen?”
“The pulse would disable all
electrical systems in the jet. Since it
would be on final approach, the elevators and rudder would be in their required
positions, along with the landing gear.
Since the landing gear is down, the plane would be unable to glide down
to a safe landing… the elevators would be stuck, all instruments would fail,
and the plane would crash on the runway.” KITT explained. “It would be a great tragedy.”
Natalie punched a few buttons on
the overhead console. “Kevin,
Bonnie. Any progress?”
“I think so,” Kevin said, “we’re uploading to KITT now.”
“All right,” Natalie said,
punching more buttons, “start the transfer.”
KITT’s central monitor came to
life as numbers quickly flashed on the screen.
David looked at the screen on his
laptop, watching the funds pour into his account. He smiled. He picked up
the gun and charged it. Looking up, he
saw the airplane come into view. He
picked up a pair of binoculars and looked through them. It was his target.
The laptop beeped and he looked at
it. The funds were completely
transferred.
“Is he still there?” Natalie
asked.
“Yes,” KITT said, “and he is
charging the EM weapon.”
“I figured he would.” Natalie
said.
“How so?”
“A criminal holds a company at bay
and threatens to kill hundreds of people unless he gets the money. As soon as the money is given to him, that
puts him in a position of power. And
the temptation to follow through with the threat anyway is too strong.”
“So now what?” KITT asked.
“We nail his ass.” Natalie said,
peeling out of the parking lot.
David picked up the EM weapon and
looked through the small monitor. He
locked onto the plane and waited for the weapon to finish charging.
Out of the corner of his eye, he
viewed a red blur coming toward them.
He looked over and saw that it was KITT.
The weapon finished charging and
he aimed the weapon at KITT. He fired.
The pulse discharged from the
weapon and headed towards KITT.
“Hi-ho-silver.” KITT said.
“No shit.” Natalie said, looking
at the discharge coming at them.
The pulse hit KITT head on, and it
quickly bounced off.
“All right!” Natalie yelled.
David looked in amazement as the
pulse bounced off of KITT. He looked up
and saw the plane getting closer. He
aimed the weapon at the plane.
“He’s about to fire!” KITT said.
“Take it out.” Natalie said.
“Activating MicroJam.”
David pulled the trigger on the
weapon. Nothing. He pulled it again and again. The weapon failed to fire. “No!” he yelled as the plane sailed over him
and landed on the runway.
He aimed at KITT again and pulled
the trigger. It was no use, the weapon
was dead! He put the strap around his
shoulder and grabbed his laptop. He ran
across the field towards the road.
KITT tore up the ground as he sped
after David.
David crawled through a hole he
made in the fence earlier and onto the road.
Cars blew their horns and veered all over the road to avoid him. He aimed the EM weapon at a car which
stopped. He ran over to the driver’s
side and dragged the defenseless driver out and slammed him down to the
road. He tossed the weapon into the
backseat and sped off.
Natalie crashed KITT through the
fence, almost broad-siding a car on the road.
“Track him.” Natalie said.
KITT’s windshield switched to
Virtual Reality mode and highlighted David’s stolen getaway car.
“Keep on him.” Natalie said.
“I’m doing my best, Natalie, but
if I speed up, we will more than likely cause an accident.” KITT said.
“Any idea where he could be
going?” Natalie asked.
“You’re asking me?!” KITT said.
“Well… yeah!”
“I don’t know, do I look like his
car?”
“Forget it, let’s just nail
him. Gimme everything you got.” Natalie
said, weaving in and out of cars.
David sped through the city,
running cars off the road. He looked at
the clock on the stereo. Their flight
to freedom left in three hours.
He blasted across the bridge over
Elliott Bay and sped towards the apartment building. He looked behind him and saw KITT still tailing him.
“He’s headed toward his
apartment. Shall we pursue?” KITT
asked.
“No…” Natalie said. “I got an idea.”
David paced in the elevator,
hating to be in such confined spaces when being pursued. The doors opened and he ran down the hallway
to his apartment. He opened the door
and ran inside.
Cynthia was sitting on the
sofa. She stood up when he walked
in. “I’m ready to go. Do you have the weapon?”
“FLAG disabled the weapon. I dunno if it works or not. I have a car waiting for us downstairs. Let’s go.”
“Wait. FLAG took out the weapon?” Cynthia asked.
“Yeah, so we better get the hell
out of here.”
“No way! If FLAG disabled it, then they’re gonna be able to stop us now!”
“Quiet! Enough. Let’s get the
hell out of here.” David said, grabbing her by the arm.
“Forget it!” Cynthia said, running to the phone. “I’m calling him up. He’ll be able to find a way for us to get
out safely.”
“Bullshit!” David said, running
over to intercept the phone. He changed
his tone. “Don’t you trust me?” he
asked, embracing her.
Cynthia embraced him back, and
kissed him. “Of course, I do. I just want the two of us to get out of here
safely. You know he’d be able to help
us. He’s been running the show anyway.”
“Don’t worry, we will. Besides, he’s the one who brought us
together.” David said, beginning to kiss her neck.
Cynthia turned around and let her
back rest against his chest.
David brought his arms along her
sides and to her chest. He kissed her
neck again.
“So do you wanna call him or
should I?” she asked.
David brought his hands higher…
and in a swift move, snapped Cynthia’s neck.
He let her dead body fall to the floor.
“You give me a headache, love.” He said. He picked up his suitcase and ran into the hall.
The elevator took him down to the ground
floor and he exited through the lobby.
His stolen car was still sitting there waiting for him to make his
getaway.
“Hello there, David.” Natalie said
from his left, aiming her gun at him.
“Shit!” David yelled, dropping the
briefcase and running across the street, dodging cars.
Natalie ran after, barely missing
being hit by a truck.
Running as fast as he could, David
took out a gun from his pocket and blindly fired at his pursuer.
Natalie ducked as the bullets
whizzed by her. She knew better than to
fire in such an open place, for fear of hitting an innocent bystander.
“KITT, meet us at the Space
Needle.” Natalie said.
Outside the apartment building,
KITT came to life and sped down the street to try and intercept the chase.
David ran into the Space Needle
lobby waving his gun around. The people
in the lobby screamed and ran for cover.
He ran into one of the high speed elevators and activated it.
KITT screeched to a halt in front
of the entrance just as Natalie ran up.
“Dammit, we’re too late! Keep us on the tracking scope!” Natalie
said, running into the lobby. Another
elevator was open, and she hopped inside, just seconds after the doors on
David’s elevator closed.
The elevator activated and began
the fast ascent towards the top.
“KITT, where is he?” Natalie
asked.
“He’s just a few seconds above
you. He will have a two second head
start.” KITT reported.
Natalie checked the ammo in her
gun and made sure she had two extra backup clips. “How far?”
“About a minute.” KITT replied.
Natalie paused. “KITT, tap in and stop the elevator one
floor below the main room.”
She felt the elevator slowing down
and stopping.
“What’s your plan?” KITT asked.
Natalie looked up towards the top
of the elevator. She climbed up on one
of the railings and pushed an access panel open. “Easy,” she whispered, “I’m gonna sneak down from the upper
maintenance level and surprise him.”
“What do you want me to do?”
“Once I’m up there, send the
elevator to its destination.” Natalie said, climbing up a ladder.
“You got it.”
David paced around in the empty
observation deck. He had his gun
drawn. He looked at the elevator doors
and saw the numbers above it lighting up.
He aimed his gun at the doors as the elevator arrived.
His smile turned sinister as he
heard the ding. He let loose, allowing
the handgun to pour round after round of bullets into the elevator car.
He dropped the empty gun and
walked towards the elevator doors as they opened. The car was empty!
Suddenly, from behind, he felt a
striking force slam into his back. He
was thrown into the elevator car.
Natalie was on top of him,
struggling to incapacitate him.
David reached around and grabbed
her arm, twisting it behind her. Natalie
was forced to let go and he kicked her off of him, back into the observation
deck.
Natalie stood up as he kicked her
in the shin. She fell down to the
ground as he went for his gun. She was
able to trip him and punch him in the stomach.
A kick to the back of his legs
brought David down, who tried to kick Natalie away, who elbowed him in the
chest, breaking some ribs. She punched
him twice in the face.
David punched back, hitting
Natalie in the jaw. He got up and went
to punch her again when she kicked him in his chest. He yelled in pain as the broken ribs were irritated and as more
snapped.
Remembering her training from the
FBI, Natalie gave one final devastating kick to David’s head, sending him
falling to the ground.
That didn’t stop him however. David rolled back onto his feet and managed
to pick up the gun he had dropped before and aim it at Natalie.
She kicked the gun out from his
hands and kneed him in the groin.
David fell down to the ground,
moaning.
“I figured that would take your
ass down.” Natalie said. She took out
her handcuffs and put them on David, who was still moaning.
She turned him around onto his
back, he was still moaning and squirming.
“You know,” she said, “you can hit
and punch and kick a man in his ribs, and he’ll still get up for some
more. But give him a fast ball in the
grapes and he’ll turn into a whining little twit.”
“The authorities have been
notified.” KITT said.
“Good job KITT. Pip, pip, cheerio, Dave.” Natalie said,
walking into an elevator and letting the doors close.
The elevator took her down to the
lobby where the police were securing the scene. She had her badge out and flashed it to the cops and they let her
pass through.
She walked over to KITT, who was
waiting for her. “The police have discovered
the dead body of Cynthia Weiss in her apartment.” KITT reported.
“Really?” Natalie asked. “Doesn’t surprise me.”
“How do you mean?” KITT asked.
“Things just don’t add up to this
case. I mean how can a spy from MI5 who
was working with Irish terrorists suddenly come across the fact of the new EM
weapon? It’s suspicious. Something tells me that neither Cynthia or
David were the brains of this outfit.” Natalie said, getting in.
“You’re suspecting a mastermind?”
“KITT, I don’t know what to suspect. All I know is that things were just too
sloppy for this show to be run by David… or his dead sex toy.”
“I’m just glad that nasty weapon
is out of commission. After being hit
with it, I would prefer not to see it again.” KITT said.
“You know what KITT? I would prefer that too. I don’t think it would suit you too well.”
Natalie said, smiling and driving off.
Knight Foundation
1943 Hrs
“So what were those contraptions
you used to stop the EM weapon?” Natalie asked.
“Well one of the uploads outfitted
KITT with a negative ion field. I
remembered it because Lane Cassidy’s limo was equipped with the same
thing. The field basically allowed the
discharge to just simply bounce off.” Kevin explained.
“And the second upload?” Maddock
asked.
“We were able to refit KITT’s
MicroJam to simply lock the weapon up.
A few equations threw a wrench into the works.” Bonnie said. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’d better get to
repairing KITT’s communications.”
“I’ll help.” Kevin said, getting
up, and leaving the room after Bonnie.
“You don’t seem fully satisfied,
Agent Markins.” Maddock said.
“To be honest, Russ, I’m not.”
Natalie said.
“Why? We nabbed Dayne. He’s on
charges for murder and theft.”
“Dayne didn’t seem too smart to
pull off a heist like this.”
“How’s that?”
“Things just seemed too
sloppy. Not to mention he killed his
girlfriend pretty much for no reason.
That sends up a red flag in my criminology book. What if she knew too much?”
“You’re being paranoid, Nat.”
Maddock said, stretching in his chair.
“Please don’t call me Nat.”
“Sorry.” Maddock said, sitting
up. “I think this was just your common
cyber geek terrorist.”
“Maybe you’re right.” Natalie
said. “I guess past cases are melding
together.” She said, humoring the boss.
Natalie got up and walked out the
door. She knew that there was something
else going on, but she couldn’t place it.
There was more behind David Dayne than met the eye, and the thickheaded
boss just couldn’t see it.
She walked down the hallway,
dissatisfied, but what could she do?
Then she knew exactly what it was.
She walked into her office, and
pulled up her case report on the computer.
She typed something at the end and read it to herself. “Case remains open. Lead suspect/mastermind still at large…”
She saved the file and uploaded it
into an email.
>Destination?
Natalie paused for awhile before
typing:
>Federal Bureau of
Investigation.
She hit the send button and
exhaled. Hopefully more light would be shed
on the case now that the Bureau is investigating… She leaned back in her chair
and closed her eyes…
“You know, Nats,” Julie said,
knowing that Natalie hated the nickname of Nat, “I’m thinking we need to do
something wild after graduation.”
“Yeah, if we make it to
graduation.” Natalie said, writing furiously on a piece of paper.
“Of course we will! You and me!
Always.” Julie assured.
Natalie nodded and smiled. “Any ideas?”
Julie stopped and thought. “How about throwing a big post grad party
and getting wildly drunk?”
“Sounds good to me,” Natalie
said, “of course that’s gonna be a pipe dream unless you finish that report of
yours.”
“You kidding? I got mine done already.”
Natalie looked at Julie with a
look of shock. “No fair! I’m only half done on mine.”
Julie smiled. “Quick to finish, quick to party...”
Natalie opened her eyes, glassy
now from remembering her friend at the academy. She looked at the document sitting on her desktop and
nodded. She hit the send button.
A man sat in front of a computer
in a darkened room. He wore all black,
save for a dark blue vest over his chest.
He clicked the mouse button. The
computer screen displayed the words: Email intercepted and terminated.
He clicked on the email and viewed
Natalie’s case report. No way in hell
her added speculation would ever make it to the Bureau.
“Johnson.” He said.
A man answered to the name and
walked up to him. “Yes sir?”
“Get me David Dayne.” The man
said.
“No problem.” Johnson said,
leaving the room.
The man in the blue vest looked at
the computer screen. A tap on the
keyboard quickly changed the image to the security feed from the Knight
Industries garage. He watched Bonnie
Barstow and Kevin Williams work on repairing KITT.
Johnson quickly returned with a
cell-phone. “Here you are.”
The man took the cell-phone and
held it up to his ear.
“This is Dayne. And hurry it up too, these wardens aren’t
too happy I’m getting a call.”
“Yeah, well who cares?” the man
said. “I must say, however… Nice going
you worthless piece of shit! You
screwed up the whole operation!”
“Cut the crap man. How was I supposed to know that they were
able to shield themselves and disable the weapon?”
“By being as smart as I paid you
to!” the man yelled into the phone.
“Have fun rotting away in your cell.”
“You aren’t gonna get me out?”
“Why should I come to the rescue
of someone who screwed up?” the man said, hanging up the phone.
“What now?” Johnson asked.
“What now, indeed, Johnson. What can I say? If you want a job done right, you have to do it yourself.” He
said, zooming in on the feed of the Knight Foundation garage.
