Chop Shop

2047 Hrs

Location: Downtown Phoenix, Arizona

The Swat team had the Chop Shop surrounded.  Some members moved to have a clear shot of the doors.  They armed their guns.  Other members moved to the commander at the main door.  The commander had a bomb.  He set it on the door.  The team moved away and the door blew off.

The team stormed into the shop with guns armed and drawn.  It was empty.

“What the hell?” said the commander.

All of a sudden, a bunch of men popped up from hiding places.  They were all armed with semi-automatic guns.

“MOVE OUT!” the commander yelled.  The Swat team scattered as a rash of semi-automatic gunfire flew throughout the Chop Shop.  The members outside ran into the building.  One man, badly wounded, made it outside and collapsed onto the ground.  The rest of the team were dead in minutes.

Knight Air Transport

0907 Hrs

Location: 75 miles North East of Phoenix, Arizona

Shawn McCormick was in the garage, watching Kevin Williams make some adjustments to KITT.

Kevin slid out from under the car.  “Okay, most adjustments are done.  KITT’s hydrofoil can permit him to go faster in water.  Also, it’s been adapted to travel in anything, in liquid form of course.”

“Sounds good.  What else?” Shawn asked.

“His High Traction Drop-Downs have more capability to go over rough terrain.”  He wiped his forehead.  I’ve installed new rocket boosters that can get KITT’s top speed up to 500 miles per hour.  Also, tell me, what have you been doing to him!?  Some of his circuit boards were either fried or screwed.”

“What can I say, Kevin?  I’ve been keeping him busy.”

“Busy is right, Shawn.” KITT said.

“Is it really that bad KITT?” Shawn asked.

Kevin spoke up.  “KITT really hasn’t been the same after the ordeal with Goliath.  Bonnie and I patched him together quickly so you could work again, but I’ve been working the past weeks to get him at top efficiency.”

“So he’s okay, right?”

“He will be.  His systems are working at 98.52335 percent.” Kevin said looking at a readout.

“Good work.” Shawn said.  She saw Russell Maddock walk in.  “Hey, Russ.  What’s up?”

“I got a phone call from a friend of mine’s wife.  Her husband’s a member of the Swat team here in Phoenix.  Last night, during a raid, the team that he was serving in got ambushed.  Except for him, they were all killed.  He’s in pretty bad shape.  His name is Mike Casdi.  I want you and KITT to investigate this.  Both of you are going undercover in the Phoenix Police Department.  You have to find the leak, before any more cops are killed.”

“Both of us?” Shawn asked.

“KITT will be retrofitted with a custom body that matches the police units of the department.” Kevin said.

“You got it.” Shawn said.

“Attention all Foundation personnel.  We will be making our decent at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in about 15 minutes.  Prepare for landing.”

The garage crew scrambled to put up any tools and other loose objects.  Kevin and Shawn made sure KITT was anchored.  The garage crew found their way to their seats and strapped themselves in.  Kevin, Shawn, and Maddock got inside KITT.

The plane landed and taxied to an out of the way part of the airport.  Maddock and Kevin got out of KITT.

“KITT, release docking clamps.” Shawn said.

“Docking clamps released.” KITT said.

“Open garage door.”

“Garage door opened.”

“Let’s go.” said Shawn as she sped out of the plane.

Chop Shop

0945 Hrs

Shawn pulled up to the crime scene, but nobody would let her in.  “God, they have this place sealed tight.” she said.

“25 cops were killed here last night, Shawn.” KITT said.

“I know, KITT.  Swing back to the plane and pick up Kevin.  I think we need to ask Mike Casdi some questions.”

“If he’s still alive.” KITT said.

“I hope so.  He may be our only help in this case.”

St. Joseph’s Hospital

1046 Hrs

Kevin walked into the ICU of the hospital.  Shawn waited outside in KITT.

Kevin walked up to Mike’s bed.  “Michael Casdi?”

Mike moaned.  “Wh- who are you?”

“I’m Kevin Williams from the Knight Foundation.  We’re investigating the ambush that happened last night.”

“Chop shop...ambush...leak.  I... I made it.”

“Take your time.  Do you have any clue who the leak is?”

“No.”

“Okay, thank you.  Rest now.” Kevin said.  He walked out.

An orderly, who was eavesdropping, walked over to Mike’s bed and stared into his eyes.  Mike stuttered some words.

The orderly took out a syringe and stuck it into Mike’s IV.  He walked out.

Mike groaned and shook with pain as the poison worked through his body.  He went into a seizure.  The machines connected to him began to beep.

Shawn walked into the lobby.  Kevin walked up to her.

“Anything?” Shawn asked.

“Not much.  I’m surprised that he is still alive-” he was cut off by a loud alarm.

“Code blue- ICU.  Repeat, code blue- ICU.”

Kevin and Shawn ran into the ICU to see a huddle of hospital personal surrounding Mike.

“He’s flatlined.” said a nurse.

“Defib!” barked a doctor.

The nurse grabbed the defibrillators and rubbed them together.  She handed them to the doctor.  “CLEAR!” she yelled.

“CLEAR!” repeated the other people.

The doctor pressed the defibrillators hard against Mike’s chest.  His body shook as the strong electrical charge ran through his body.  His heart began to beat again.  But Mike abruptly went into a seizure.

“He’s seizing!” the nurse said.

“Get me 20cc’s of Anthropene.” the doctor ordered.

The same orderly who poisoned Mike, handed the doctor a needle filled with poison.  The doctor quickly stuck it in Mike.  His heart stopped again.

“Defib again!” the doctor barked.  “Clear!” she yelled.  Mike was flatline still.

“Let’s shock the flatline again and quit.” the doctor said.

“Okay, everybody, clear!” the nurse ordered.

Mike was shocked again, but was still flatline.

“Okay, let’s call it,” the doctor said.  “What’s the time?”

“1105 Hrs.” the nurse replied.  She turned off all the machines and covered Mike’s body.

“Oh shit.” Kevin said.

“What?” asked Shawn.

“Mike Casdi was the only person who could give us an account of what happened.  And now he’s dead.  There goes our goddamn case.”

“You don’t think he died naturally?” Shawn asked.

“Do you?  Think about it.”

“He was murdered?”

“Exactly what I’m thinking.” Kevin said.  “I think we’re getting way over our heads on this one.”

Knight Air Transport

1145 Hrs

“You think he was WHAT?!” yelled Maddock.

“Murdered, sir.”  Kevin said.  “We’re not sure how.”

“Okay, so what do we do about it?”

“Get the medical examiner to do an autopsy.” Shawn said.

“The man is 45 minutes dead.  You want me to go to his wife and ask her that?”

“She has been told, hasn’t she?” Shawn asked.

“Yea.  But 40 minutes ago.” Maddock said.

“Russ, we need that autopsy done.  Excrement systems still perform in the body for about a day after death.  We don’t have much time.”

Maddock nodded and walked out of the plane towards the airport terminal.

Residence of Laura Casdi

1231 Hrs

Maddock pulled up in a rental car.  He got out and walked to the door.  He rang the doorbell.

Laura Casdi opened the door.  She had tear streaks running down her face.  “Russell.  Come in, please.”

Maddock hugged Laura.  “I’m so sorry about Mike.”

“Thanks,” Laura said, still sobbing, she picked up a picture of him.  “He was one in a million.”

“Laura, the Knight Foundation is speculating with Mike’s death.  We.. we don’t think it was natural.” Maddock said.

“You mean he might have been murdered?!” Laura said.

“It’s just a theory, Laura.  We need to do an autopsy.”

“What?  Oh.  Yes, do what you need to do.  I’m sure Mike would have wanted it.”

“Thank you, Laura.”  He began to walk out.  He turned around.  “Laura, the Knight Foundation will cover all of Mike’s hospital and funeral expenses.”

“Russell.  You don’t need to do that, please.” Laura said with tears running down her eyes.”

“I want to, Laura.  Mike was my friend.  I want to help.”

“Thank you.”

“Sure, no problem.  And I will promise you this, I will find this out.”  He walked out and over to his car.  He got in.  He called Shawn on the satellite phone.  “Shawn?  Call the medical examiner.”

Knight Air Transport

1606 Hrs

Kevin walked into the garage.  “I have the autopsy report.” he said.

Shawn walked over.  “What does it say?”

“His death was nowhere near natural.  The autopsy shows a chemical in his bloodstream.  It’s drain cleaner!”

“What?!” Maddock asked.

“Drain-cleaner, sir.” Kevin repeated.

Maddock looked around the room.  It began to spin.  “We have to stop this.” he said.  “Kevin, is the new body ready?”

“Yes, finally” Shawn said.  She walked over to a tarpaulin and grabbed an end.  Kevin grabbed another and they pulled it off.

“Ta-da!” KITT said.  KITT was transformed into a blue and white Camaro that matched the other cars of the Phoenix Police Department.

“Great job.” Maddock said.  He walked around to the front.  “What about this?” he asked, pointing to KITT’s scanner.

“Since it’s red, it might get people to pull over more.” Kevin joked.

“Great job, Kevin.” Shawn said.  She turned to Maddock.  “I’ll report in six hours.” she said.

Phoenix Police Department

1651 Hrs

Shawn parked KITT around the corner and walked to the precinct.  KITT, drove himself to the police lot.

Shawn walked up to the desk.

“Can I help you?” the desk officer asked.

“Yes, I’m Shawn McCormick.  I’m transferring in from Seattle PD.”

“Okay, go see the Commish.  He’s on the top floor, last door on your right.”

Shawn followed the officer’s instructions entered a room.  She walked over to the secretary.  “I have transfer papers for the commissioner.” she said.

“Go on in.” the secretary replied.

Shawn walked into the commissioner’s office.  She handed him papers.  “Shawn McCormick, sir.  Transferring in from Seattle Metro.”

“Thank you, officer.  I’m Commissioner Walter Nelson, nice to have you aboard with us.”

“Thank you, sir.” Shawn said.

He punched some keys on his computer.  He printed out something.  “Here is a slip to requisition a uniform, piece, and vehicle.  Time for a tour.” he said.

A few minutes alter, they arrived at the lot.

“...and this is ‘the lot.’  All the units for this precinct are housed here.  Now, we don’t have a unit for you right now, but-” he looked over at a new car.  “Well, I guess there is.  Although, I have no clue where this came from.  Anyway, our lot manager handles the rest.  The keys are inside.  We’re gonna assign you a probation officer, he needs to learn the ropes.  He’ll be with you in a few.”

“Thanks, commissioner.” Shawn said.  She got inside KITT.  She exhaled hard.  “Does that man ever shut up?!” she asked KITT.  “KITT, print out my beat for today.”

“Sure thing, Shawn.” KITT said as Shawn’s beat printed.

A man walked up to Shawn’s car.

“You Shawn McCormick?” he asked.

“Yea.”

The man got in.  “I’m Jason West, probation officer.”

“Nice to meet you, Jason.” Shawn said.  “Let’s get started.” Shawn said as she pulled out of the lot.

June 4, 2000

0500 Hrs

Shawn’s alarm clock woke her up and she quickly got out of bed and changed into he police uniform.  She went down to the galley for a quick breakfast.

When she walked into the garage, she noticed the Knight 4000 wasn’t there.  Neither was Kevin.  She thought nothing of it, and walked towards the terminal parking lot to get her rental car.

1416 Hrs

Shawn turned up the radio to hear an incoming call for her.

“Attention all units in the vicinity of 7th Street and Van Buren.  Robbery reported at First National Bank.  Handle code three.”

Shawn pressed a button and turned on the sirens.

Jason grabbed the radio.  “This is Unit 22, we are red and en-route to the bank.”

“Copy that, 22.  Proceed with extreme caution.”

Shawn screeched to a halt in front of the bank.  She got out and crouched behind the car.  Jason ran around to where she was.  “Jason, go down that alley and find an entrance.”

Jason ran down the alley.

“KITT, give me a look inside the bank.”

“Right away, Shawn.” An image popped up on KITT’s monitor.  “I am detecting one inert human male, four armed men, and ten hostages.”

“Okay, KITT.  I’m going in.  Cover me.”

Jason came back.  “There’s a side exit.  Nobody’s watching it.”

“Okay, when backup arrives, tell them to take position around the front door and side exit.”

“You’re going in?!”

“Yes I am.  Don’t worry.”

“Be careful, McCormick.” Jason said.

“I intend to.” Shawn said as she took out her gun and ran to the side door.  She walked in quietly.

Outside, two units arrived.  Jason walked up to them.  “McCormick’s inside.  She said to take position at a side door over there and around the front.”

Shawn was standing at the door and she saw two officers run up.  “Wait for my signal.” she said.

Jason walked over across the street and into another building.  He took out his flashlight and aimed it towards the bank.

A robber walked over to the leader.  “Hey man,” he pointed towards the building, “that’s the signal.”

The leader squinted out the window.  “It’s Morse code,” he said.  “Three cops in the back.” he read.  He turned to two men.  “Kill them.”

Shawn brought the two cops inside and ahead of her.  KITT called her on her comm-link.  “Shawn, a Morse code message was transmitted to the bank which originated across the street.”

“Who was it?”

“I don’t know, I was scanning the bank at the time.  The robbers know your position, Shawn!  Get out of there!”

Shawn was about to signal the cops back, but gunfire came from around the corner.

KITT’s engine roared to life and he sped through the front doors of the bank.  The hostages ran quickly out of the bank.

“We’re not done yet!” the leader said.  He took out a detonator.

“Shit!  This place is wired!” a cop yelled.

“Get in the car now!” Shawn yelled.  Shawn and the two cops piled inside of KITT as the leader pressed the detonator button.

Jason looked over and saw the bank explode.  He saw the police car emerge from the flaming building.  He walked over to it and helped the wounded officers out.

1725 Hrs

After Jason left for the day, Shawn was doing some work inside KITT.

“Shawn, I think I know who sent that Morse-code message that gave you away.”

“Who?!”

“While I was scanning the bank, I had track of every person at the scene, even the hostages, but I did lose track of one person.  It was Jason, Shawn.”

“Oh no.” Shawn said.  “We should follow him.”

“Shawn, be careful.” Kevin said.

Shawn followed Jason.  He was walking around the precinct.  He went to a payphone.

Shawn spoke into her comm-link.  “KITT, Jason walked up to a phone.  I need to hear his conversation.”

“I’ve tapped in, Shawn.  Transmitting...” KITT said.

“...I don’t know, sir.  I transmitted that signal over to the bank.  They were gonna kill those cops, but that new car that Washington wanted us to try out stopped them.  What’s next?”

A disguised voice spoke up.  “A stakeout is planned for tomorrow.  You and your partner will be sent to it along with other units.  Try to kill her in the cross-fire.”

“You got it.” Jason said.  He hung up the phone and walked off.

Shawn came around the corner.  “KITT, were was that call transmitted to?”

“I do not know, Shawn, the lines are scrambled.” KITT reported.

“Okay.  We got what we needed.  I’m gonna go talk to Commissioner Nelson.”  She walked into his office.  “Sir, I think we have a problem.”

“What?” Commissioner Nelson asked.

“There’s a leak in the department, and I know who it is.”

“What?!  Who is it?!”

“It’s my partner, Jason West.”

“Officer, I think you are making a big mistake.”

“No, sir” Shawn said, “I listened on a phone call.  He took orders from an unidentified man.  I’m not who you think I am, sir.  I am with the Foundation for Law and Government, a division of the Knight Foundation.  I was assigned to work covert to stop the leak.”

“No, Shawn you don’t seem to understand.  What I’m saying is, Jason West, takes his orders from me.” He said as he reached for a gun.

“What?!”

“Sorry, Shawn, but it seems you made a mistake.  Jason West is my errand boy.” He pulled out his gun and aimed it at Shawn.  “Wrong person to tell, McCormick.”

Shawn swallowed hardly in her throat.

“Walk calmly down the hall.  This gun is real and loaded.  Don’t try to pull any shit.  Move.”

Shawn opened the Commissioner’s door and walked down the hall.  She got up to the elevator and began to press the button.

“No,” the Commissioner said, “stairs.”

Shawn nodded and walked slowly down the stairs.  They got into the rear parking lot in an alley behind the building.

The Commissioner took out his gun and pushed Shawn over towards a Lincoln.  “Get in and drive.” he said.

Shawn got in the driver’s side.

Commissioner Nelson got into the passenger side and handed Shawn the keys.  Shawn started the engine and drove off.

“Head towards the airport, executive terminal.”

KITT heard every word of their conversation.  He started to follow them.  He contacted Maddock and Kevin.  “Kevin, Mr. Maddock, Shawn was kidnapped by Commissioner Nelson!  He’s the leak!”

Kevin looked at Maddock with wide eyes.  “Oh shit.” he said.

“Where are they headed, KITT?”

“They’re headed towards the airport, to the executive terminal.” KITT said.

“Great job, KITT,” Maddock said, “we’ll meet you there.”

Kevin walked over to Maddock.  “We’re right near the executive terminal.”

“Good, let’s go, they should be here soon.” Maddock said.

Shawn looked in her rear-view mirror and saw KITT, turn down a street.  She bought him some time and missed the turn to the airport.

“Hey you missed the damn turn!” Nelson yelled.

“Whoops.” Shawn said.

Nelson held the gun at the back of Shawn’s head.

“Relax officer, you’re off duty now....” Shawn heard in her mind.

“Don’t mess around, McCormick.  Turn down this street and don’t pull anything.” He said.

Inside Shawn’s mind, she saw Watts pulling the trigger of a gun.

KITT sped up towards Kevin and Maddock.  Kevin hopped into the passenger side, and Maddock got into the driver’s side.  “KITT, how far away are they?” Maddock asked.

“About a minute away.” KITT said.

“Okay, scan for them,” Maddock said, “I want to know the exact second they enter the terminal.”

“They just did.” KITT said.

“Where are they?” Kevin asked.

“They’re headed towards a jet lot.  They’re probably headed towards the Commissioner’s plane.” KITT deduced.

Maddock floored it.
